    Hey,

I don't know why but DxWnd has been causing some trouble lately. By using
the default settings, the game hangs(not responding) during the game's
cutscenes. It's really weird, could you please look into the problem?

    Thank you

I'll mind your case as soon as back from vacation. In the meanwhile, could you clarify the word "lately"? Did you lately notice the problem or did you get it with some late dxwnd version? In the second case it would be useful to know from what version. In addition, some logs would help me.

I fixed the problem by setting DxWnd to compatibility mode to Win7. Note I said DxWnd and not the game itself!
I tested on VM and it seemed to work just fine with Win7 but Win10 Education Build 1803 it seems to crash/not respond. So that's why I decided to try compatibity mode which indeed fixed the issue.

To clarify the "lately" part: Until the problem ocurred I was using an older version(no idea which is it), you can see on my video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqNQE2B_E_g I was using it daily and from a day to another the problem arose. Thinking it might be DxWnd I tried the latest build which didn't fix it. I also tried to bisect the problem by testing multiple builds but all seemed to have the problem.

If you'd like to test it yourself is really easy just hit "New game" and press spacebar until stan lee starts narrating there the game should stop responding.

Tried to replicate the problem again and it didn't occur, I'm more confused than ever now, here's the log(of the failed attempt to replicate). Sorry if this is confusing but I don't understand what may have caused it in the first place now.

A possibile culprit could be some recent Win10 upgrade, and win7 compatibility may neutralize it. Thank you for telling, I'll try to find out better since the problem may easily extend to many other games

I tried to follow your instructions, but the game keeps working, movies included.
I don't know what could have caused the problem, but whenever it happens again I'm going to investigate it!
My suggestion is to keep running the game with logging enabled (maybe with "Circular" option to avoid flooding the hard disk) and whenever the problem happens again, kill the game (with DxWnd kill commanf or task manager) so that the last log lines should highlight the problem.

  • gho

That's funny: I just notice the game didn't stop during the movies, but when I left the intro sequence run I got a bad surprise: the game crashes right after the user should take control!
    There's more to investigate.

    update
Bad news from here: the problem happens also with the game running in native mode without DxWnd! It must be something introduced with some Win upgrade .... I do hope is not related to the copy protection schema, or we're in troubles. Is the game running at your side?

      Sorry for the waiting!
Yeah, it runs fine. Where did you get the game from?

      • gho

Honestly, I can't remember, I think I got it quite some time ago because if you now google for "spiderman 2000 download" you can easily find many CD images, but no RIPs. In any case, it seems that the game proper crack is available separately and has CRC 32 7E963F09.

Hey, it's me again. This is getting weirder.
Yesterday I was speedrunning the game and it ran just fine. Although today the same problem came back.

From the looks of it, it seems related to the sound. Since it happened when the hostages started to speak.
The reason i think that is the problem is because of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Zzj4-rs3f0 if you go to 32:04 you can hear annoying noises which are the "corrupted" lizard steps. I don't know what caused it. The steps sound should be like in 28:53.

EDIT: Enabling Hook DirectSound didn't change a thing. But I noticed the newer versions don't hang immedietelly, they first stop hanging for a few moments, come back to normal, then hang forever.

Also I would like to say the problem isn't during cutscenes as i mentioned in the title. The thing was that it happened during the inital cutscene but going to the level select and play random levels also happens. It's literally this problem https://sourceforge.net/p/dxwnd/discussion/general/thread/83ae81b9/

I don't want you to think I'm ignoring this one, but honestly I can't immagine how I could possibly try to investigate: getting that far on the game is impossible for a clumsy gamer like me.
Is the problem related to the usage of DxWnd? I mean, didn't it ever happened without dxWnd?

Don't worry man. I have no idea what causes it. Testing on different PCs with win10 works just fine and my win7 VM too.

I'm also a dev so I understand really well your situation :P Looking back I explained it really badly. I also found a workaround for the meantime(working in VM), so I guess it might really be OS related.

I'll be updating this with findings on the problem so people in the future can understand what's going on.
